John Dunn Biography

John "Mother" Dunn was named the Baltimore Ravens’ assistant strength and conditioning coach on February 12, 2008. Having built a reputation for producing some of the strongest and best-conditioned players in the NFL, Dunn brings 22 years of pro coaching experience to Baltimore.

Voted by his peers as the NFL’s Professional Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 1994, Dunn has held strength and conditioning positions with several teams: Washington Redskins (2004-05 and 1984-86), New York Giants (1997-2003), San Diego Chargers (1990-96) and Los Angeles Raiders (1987-89).

In his most-recent NFL stint, Dunn served as the Redskins’ head strength and conditioning coach from 2004-05. Originally beginning his professional career with Washington under Joe Gibbs (1984-86), he returned to the Redskins for his 2nd tour after spending 7 seasons as the Giants’ head strength and conditioning coach.

During his time with New York, players under Dunn’s guidance experienced few injuries and were well conditioned deep into the season. The highlight of his tenure with New York came when his team won the NFC Championship in 2000 and advanced to Super Bowl XXXV against the Ravens. Dunn was also part of another championship run in 1994, as the Chargers advanced to play San Francisco in Super Bowl XXIX.

Dunn’s 1st NFL head position came in 1987 when he was hired to lead the Raiders’ strength and conditioning program. He remained in Los Angeles for 3 seasons. Before breaking into the NFL, Dunn founded his own gym, Mother Dunn Nautilus, which had locations in York, PA and Goshen, NY. He took on these ventures following the 1979 season, when he served as a graduate assistant offensive line coach at his alma mater Penn State.

Dunn played defensive line at Penn State for 2 seasons before switching to offensive line his junior and senior years. During his senior campaign, he was named one of the Nittany Lions’ co-captains. Following that season, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1978.

Dunn graduated with a degree in health and physical education from Penn State in 1978. A 3-sport star at Taconic Hills (Philmont, NY) HS, he lettered in football, basketball and track and field. As a senior, Dunn was nationally ranked in the shot put. Born 7/22/56 in Great Barrington, MA, John has 2 daughters: Jessica (18) and Taylor (16).
